Insulation for your home or business is important, allowing heat to circulate throughout. The type of insulation you decide to use makes a difference. Spray foams are classified as open or closed based on the characteristics of the bubbles or cells that create the foam. Open cell foams are softer and more flexible because they are not fully encapsulated. Open cell foam insulation the trapped bubbles lessen the heat transfer through the foam. Closed cell foams keep air and moisture from getting inside, as the bubbles of the foam are pressed tightly together, and this creates a denser foam.
Open and closed cell spray foams expand differently due to these differences; open cell expands to about 3″ thickness (100-1 expansion ratio) and closed cell expands to around 1″ thickness (20-1 expansion ratio). So, an open cell spray foam can only be applied in one layer for most walls. If you’re not sure which foam can benefit your home, consult our foam contractors to review and discuss your project.
Closed cell spray foam is rigid, so it naturally increases the structural integrity of your space. Because the cells/bubbles are completely closed, this product is waterproof.
Open cell spray foams greatly expand upon application, so it fills in even the tiniest of spaces. Nooks, crannies, cracks, and crevices are all very hard to fill with closed cell spray foam.
