Closed & Open Cell Foam Insulation: What's The Difference?
Insulation for your home or business is important, allowing heat to circulate throughout. The type of insulation you decide to use makes a difference. Spray foams are classified as open or closed based on the characteristics of the bubbles or cells that create the foam. Open cell foams are softer and more flexible because they are not fully encapsulated. Open cell foam insulation the trapped bubbles lessen the heat transfer through the foam. Closed cell foams keep air and moisture from getting inside, as the bubbles of the foam are pressed tightly together, and this creates a denser foam.
Open and closed cell spray foams expand differently due to these differences; open cell expands to about 3" thickness (100-1 expansion ratio) and closed cell expands to around 1" thickness (20-1 expansion ratio). So, an open cell spray foam can only be applied in one layer for most walls. If you're not sure which foam can benefit your home, consult our foam contractors to review and discuss your project.
